Set out with the plan of getting a 10 mile long run in today. Headed out past Redlands airport and kept on going until I hit 5, then turned around and headed back. Flat, uphills and down. I hit 10 miles around my house in about 1:15:00, and decided I might as well run a full 90 minutes. Well, when I was at 90 minutes I was just a quarter mile or so from hitting 12 miles. So once I hit 12 I stopped.

Feeling confident about the half marathon I have coming up first weekend in June. Last year I ran a 1:30 6 months post partum, and excited to see how fast I can crank it out this year. Definitely beating that.

Felt a little sluggish as I started this run. Overcast morning and felt good to be out. 1:19:51 overall time. 10.01 miles. Out Highland Avenue, hill at mile 4, ran through a beautiful huge cemetary miles 5-6, and headed home. Always nice to have another longer run in the books. 7:58 average pace.

Slept in a bit because it was going to be a cooler day and we didn't have any solid plans. And I was overall just feeling worn out. Penny was so grumpy and always loves the stroller so I decided to take her out while Cam ran on the treadmill. Pushed the stroller on a 5 mile loop, then decided to add 2 more with the stroller. Finished with 3 on the treadmill. My watch was acting up on the stroller run, but probably averaged around 8:00 pace.

3.5 miles on the treadmill before it sounded like it exploded. So frustrating. So I decided to rush the girls after spending time with customer service, and got everyone in the stroller for a stroller run. Walked Aubrey to school and as we are walking into the playground I have the flattest of flats (and Cameron ran over the bike pump a few days ago.) I give up!

Came home and did the Upper Fix workout.

During nap time I decided to get out on a 4 mile run. Decided to somewhat tempo. Started with 2 miles fast (6:40ish pace), jogged a half mile, and then did 1 mile fast (6:30). Jogged last half mile home .

Got up early and headed out. Went out 5th towards the Hillside Cemetary. Good size hill miles 3-4. Nice to be out and about. Went along the ridge past the cemetary til I hit 5 miles, then headed home.

3.00 miles pushing double stroller. Took this run really easy and it felt like crap. I always expect tapering to feel great, but more often than not I feel sluggish. My knee was bugging and I woke up with a stiff hip. But I knew these were minor things that I could shake out before the race.

Everything fell into place the week before this race and I knew I could have a great race. I didn't do any intervals or tempo runs or much speed work at all in my training, just cranked out a lot miles on the treadmill mixed with some longer runs on Saturday. I was confident I was more fit than last year and could beat my time of 1:30.

I warmed up 2.00 miles up the road, nice and easy. It was cool at the start and I got off the bus with more than an hour before the race started, so I was ready to warm up literally. Once again, warming up pays off and half a mile up the road was an empty campground with lots of open bathrooms. Beats waiting twenty plus minutes at the port a potties.

Got lined up and once the gun went off I saw 5-6 girls dash out in front of me. I wanted to start conservative, and aim for a 1:25 pace (6:30). I ended up running next to a girl and noticed she had on an Ogden Half Marathon shirt. What a small world! Ran with her for 5ish miles and then slowly left her behind and started picking off each girl in front of me.

By mile 7 I was in second place, with 1st place a good quarter mile ahead, but I was gaining on her. By mile 8 she was standing on the side of the road cramped up.

Once I took the lead my adrenaline took over and I just kept cranking out the miles. I had a biker who stayed with me because I was the lead girl, and he kept my updated on who was behind me, and how far. By mile 10 it was obvious that I was going to win, as long as nothing crazy happened. I had no idea what time I was going to finish at, but knew I was still consistently under 1:25 pace.

The last mile I was starting to get fatigued, but the crowds pulled me in and I finished in 1:23:35. My best half is 1:22:59 (Ogden Half 2007), but this race was at sea level so I have to factor that in as well, yet I do feel like it is a bit harder course than Ogden. 

It was so fun to be fit again! I haven't won a race since having kids, and hadn't run under a 1:30 half marathon since having kids either. Which means it has been almost 7 years! I know with some speedwork I can still see improvements. So exciting.

Not sure what my next race will be, but I need to get signed up for something to keep me motivated. And I won $150!

15 mile long run with 8 miles at a faster pace. I was aiming for 7:00 pace on the faster portion. My legs were a bit fatigued. First week over 45 miles (53 total!).

Ran 4 miles (avg 8:00 approx), then began the tempo miles 4-12. Splits: 6:53, 7:01, 7:02, 6:59, 7:07, 7:14, 7:08, 6:58. The first 5 miles had a slight downhill, and then when it flattened out I began to struggle. But I made it. 3 miles easy back home. Last 1.5 miles I felt so dehydrated. Going to have to try to figure out how to get some water in on these long runs.

2 mile warmup. 8x400 at 80-82 pace with 200 jog between each (approx 90 sec). We got a downpour about 1.5 hours before my workout, and the dirt track I go too was sloppy and wet. And I waited for Cam to get home so I wouldn't have to do the workout on the treadmill, and he ended up not getting home until after 7. I get nervous when it gets dark here, so I warmed up, did 5x400 on the track, did the next 3 on the streets on the way home, cooled down for a mile, then did another 2 mile cooldown on the treadmill. So humid I could wring out my tank top when I was done.

1.5 mile warmup. 5xmile repeats at half marathon pace. The nice thing about doing mile repeats on a treadmill is that you don't have to think too much about pace, you just set the treadmill and run. Did them at 6:23 pace with a 2:30 jog in between each. I always dread interval days but they always feel so much better than I anticipate. The intervals make the run fly by! 2.5 mile cool down. Only had a mile left when my girls woke up!

Was planning on doing a fatiguing run of 7 miles followed by 3x1mile today, but I was worried I was going to run out of time, even starting by 6am, so instead ran 5 miles, followed by 4x1mile @6:00 pace with 0.50 mile (4:15 minutes) recovery between each. The cooldown suffered and was only about 1.5 miles long before I rushed everyone out the door to get Aubrey to school.

We have had a little runny nose/sore throat going around our house so thinking no second workout today unless I am really feeling up to it after the girls go to bed. Want to try to stay healthy!

Started my long run at 6am, and it was warm from the beginning. Struggled with stomach issues throughout the run, and think I had to stop 4 times to find a bathroom. But other than that I was able to just relax and somewhat mindlessly run mile after mile. It always feel good to be out. Feeling confident that I can run this marathon close to 3:00 hours. Especially since the race I signed up for is primarily downhill, and this run was at least 8 miles of gradual uphill.

Thanks Amy! I signed up for Revel Canyon City Nov 7th. So still got a few months. I wish it was at George so I could run into some of you! And my race still seems so far away. I am getting anxious to just run it!

Cam is home for a couple days so I was able to get outside today. Legs still felt a bit tired from Saturday, and it was hard to wake up early, but I am always glad when I just get up and do it. 10.13 miles in 1:22:09 (8:07 pace).

Dipping my toes into the coaching world. There is an organized kids cross country club here, and I volunteered to help out in exchange for my two oldest to be able to participate free of charge. So now we are busy two nights a week. We will see if we stick with it. I feel like my kids are too young to really get too involved. 20 min at least of abs/core exercises (Situps, lunges, squats, pushups).

And now that it is the last day of August, the blog has told me I ran 280 miles in the month of August. What?! That is an average of 10.77 miles on the days I ran. 5 of those runs were outdoors. A husband who isn't around much and 3 small kids.  Who am I?! (If I can't brag on here where can I?) No wonder I have been tired lately.

20 mile run today. Legs felt sore from mile 1. I kept thinking they would loosen up but they never did and it made for a challenging run. At least no stomach issues today though. I was ready to call it quits at mile 12. I drank my stashed gatorade and decided I would just run the 4 miles back home and call it good at 16. But mentally I couldn't let myself do it. The gatorade gave me an extra boost and I was able to power through and the last 8 miles were probably my best 8. Next week I am going to have a gu packet on hand. I was starving when I got home and made my family jump in the car and take me to breakfast.

Decided last night that I would run this race today. Wanted to still keep it somewhat a long run though. So I got to the race around 6:30, registered, and then did a 6.20 mile 'warmup'. (48:44 overall time, 7:52 pace.)

Wasn't really feeling in race mode, but I was excited to run somewhere new. I was pretty confident I would win the race. Wish they had some fun award or prize money, but knew most likely it would be a medal, and it was. Oh well. It was a tough course, and a tough day for me. Just wasn't feeling like I usually do in a race, ran alone most of the time. 42:42 overall time, 6:48 pace (6.28 mile course). First girl, third overall. This was a little discouraging because I want to run a whole marathon faster than I ran those 6 miles. And I was very confident before today that I was prepared to do that. Hopefully it was just not my day. And the race started at 8 so it was hot!

Long warm up and not being in full race mentality will slow ya down a bit. I wouldn't worry about it. I think you're in fine shape for a marathon. Keep that confidence that you are! Congrats on the win.

Thanks for your comment Riley. I was feeling a little frustrated but think it was just not a great day. Hopefully I can still kill my marathon!

Ben- I don't know if there is really any way I could get in. I found someone I could buy one from but they seem super strict. And I would hope to do well enough to place. I am signed up for another marathon here in CA November 7. I was just getting antsy to run! I wish we could have known it could have worked in St George. Good luck! Can't wait to see how everyone does this fall!

Got up and started around 5:45, ran just over 7 miles, and then grabbed Cam and the girls and jogged to the Stake 3 mile fun run. Ran the race pushing Ada in the stroller and was third overall in 20:30. Then just ran around grabbing water/gartorade wherever I could. I made it all 22 miles! 2:54:07 overall time, 7:55 average pace. I think the first 8 miles I averaged closer to 9 minute pace (mainly uphill miles). It was dark today and I don't know why it was so slow. But then I picked it up the next 10 miles and my slowest mile of those 10 was a 7:15. Actually all but the last mile was under 8 minute pace. So I am feeling good about the run overall. Took about 3 bathroom breaks. Hopefully with a taper I can get my second sub 3:00 marathon. I felt really good except my legs started getting pretty sore from miles 20-22.

Thought about all the St George runners today! Wish I could have run with all of them. And for some reason I can't quite hit that 70 mile week (unless I add up my little hikes and walks with the girls!)

Another long run today. This was probably my best long run. I only took 2 quick bathroom stops and I kept getting faster and faster. Once again, first 7.5 miles were slightly uphill and I averaged 8:33 pace, which was a lot faster than last week. I decided to listen to music today and although I don't think I could do it every time, it was a nice change today and helped the run go a lot faster. Miles 10-20 were all under 7:30 pace with 7 of those miles near or under 7 minute pace. Considering the hills at the start and the last 1.5 miles, I am super excited about this run today.

18 mile run around San Diego. First few miles were frustrating cause it was dark and I was running in circles trying to find the parkway I knew was close. Gave up on that idea and just started running in the direction I thought would lead me to the ocean. At mile 4 I finally found the parkway and ran 3.5 more miles to the ocean. Ran back to the hotel and got there at mile 15. Checked in with Cam, drank some Gatorade, and changed into some dry clothes (no rain, just super humid/misty/marine layer). Finished with a hilly 3 mile loop that dragged on! Glad I got in all my miles on vacation and most of it got done before my kids woke up. Not my fastest, but a good long run.

At mile 2 I wanted to go home and sleep. I don't know why I am so worn out all of a sudden. Kept running hoping to snap out of it and I did for the most part. Trying to focus on easy miles and trying to have confidence in the work I have put in. I am beginning to doubt that I can run sub 3. The pace just seems so fast. Hopefully I can surprise myself and get it done! 2:59 is my PR the fall after graduating Weber (but the race was in the pouring rain, and I know it could have been faster). Fastest post baby is when my oldest was 1 and I ran 3:19 in St. George 2010. I am 100% positive I will run my fastest post-baby marathon. So approximately 7 years since I have been in the shape I am in now.

It was an early start to this race. The race was 50 minutes from our house and I had to be at the buses between 4-5 am, and get there with enough time to pick up my race packet before that. In the days leading up to the race everything seemed to fall perfectly in place. I woke up at 2:45, at some toast and a banana and water, and then headed out. I was feeling excited and maybe only a little nervous on the drive out. Mostly just confident that I had put in the work to have a good race today. My goal was to run under 3:00 hours, and if it was a good day possibly 2:50, and worse case I was confident I wouldn't go over 3:10.

Picked up my packet, got on the bus at 4:30, and headed up the mountain. It took the bus over an hour to get to the start line. It was a pretty curvy steep road and was still pitch black out. I thought I could get an hour of sleep on the bus ride, but runners are talkers and I had a great conversation with the lady next to me. And was able to watch the course out the bus window. I was even more excited to see how downhill it was. Not just slightly downhill-we were really going to be running down the mountain.

The race started above 5000 feet elevation. The bathroom lines weren't crowded and I was able to use them as much as I needed before the race. I also found a fire about 100 meters from the start that no one seemed to know about, so I was able to keep warm easily.

At 6:45 we had to put all our clothes on the truck to head down, so I did a 10 minute easy warmup, and was ready to go.

The first 13 miles I felt like I was holding back. It was hard to let so many girls pass me that I knew I could beat. There seemed to be 10-15 girls ahead of me, but I didn't want to run the first half too hard and then completely die at the end. So I tried not to go faster than 6:30 pace. I was so glad it was feeling easy, and was just able to enjoy the scenery, enjoy being in shape, and truly enjoy running. By mile 5 I could already feel the downhill pounding in my legs, but nothing to be worried about. Took a gu at mile 7 and was able to eat the whole thing.  I ran the first half in 1:23:30 (I won Fontana Days half marathon in June in 1:23:35). Even though the first half was faster than I anticipated, it was also much more downhill, and I was still feeling good. And my watch was saying I was 0.25 ahead of the mile markers. So I was running good tangents- or the course was short.

Miles 13-15 was where the hill started. And they were hills that were half a mile to a mile long. They were gradual to steep; but any hill after pounding down hill was hard. I was able to get through them but slowed considerably.

But after each stretch of hills came the steep downhill again and I was able to settle back into mid 6 minute pace until the biggest hill at mile 19-21. I had tried to down some more gu to get some calories in around mile 17, but I kept gagging on it. So instead focused on drinking a full cup of gatorade and a full cup of water at each aid station. But mile 20 was my slowest. I was able to pick it back up though, and with 5K to go I knew I could still beat 3 hours, but it would be close. 

Mile 23-24 was fine, but then it flattened out the last 2 miles and I began to see 3 hours slipping out of sight, I kept trying to charge forward. The last mile was never ending, and you ran straight for a mile and then turned for the last .20 miles, so it was hard not seeing the finish line to charge to.

When I crossed the finish line it said I was the 10th girl. I had no idea who was in front of me. At mile 18 of the race we started running past half marathoners, and it only got busier as we continued down the canyon. Well, I guess some people registered for the marathon and decided to run the half, so it screwed up the results. So by the time I found out I was in 4th it sounded great. I missed 3rd by about 90 seconds-2 minutes.

I have mixed emotions about this race, but mostly happy. A little frustrated I didn't run under 3 hours, and so close to a PR.  Maybe I got a little overconfident in my expectations. But it was only 90 seconds slower than my fastest marathon coming out of collegiate racing 7 years ago. My fastest post baby marathon by almost 20 minutes. It feels good to be back!!!! And considering I averaged 5 days a week on the treadmill, Cameron was in San Diego for 8 weeks, I have 3 little kids and I was completely self motivated; I couldn't be more proud of my race.

The second half was definitely more challenging than the first, and the splits reflect that. This was not a course to negative split.

That is a really good outcome. The hill in mile 20 must be brutal!

I wonder if your fast start cost you in the end...marathon pacing is nearly impossible.

Kam, I have debated in my head whether taking it easier on the first half would have helped. Believe me- the last marathon I ran was the one with you and Angie in Huntsville and I definitely learned my lesson there! and I kept willing myself to slow down because of that race. But it was Sooo downhill I felt like I couldn't possibly go any slower. I think because the downhill was so extreme it made any hill seem that much worse and I totally hit the wall on the hills. II guess we will never know unless I give this course another shot someday (which I totally would, but we will be moving away in a few months).

This was so so cold. And not just cause I came to Utah from 80 degree CA weather. It was 10-15 degrees, but the wind made the wind chill frigid. Plyometrics 21 Day fix workout. I have been struggling with logging my runs on here lately. I have also been struggling with motivation to keep running long or hard, which is something new to me. After my marathon, I found myself relieved for a break, and I guess I have struggled to get back into a routine. No real reason to wake up early. We will move in a few months which is part of the reason I haven't signed up for another race to keep me motivated. We have no positive knowledge of where we will move, so for now I am just trying to stay fit, not gain weight, and enjoy these last few months here in CA. 

So....I have still been running, I do need to keep logging.

While in Utah over Thanksgiving I went to Weber and got my body fat percentage tested in the bod pod. I have been struggling with knowing what is a realistic weight for me. I weigh about 10-12 pounds more than I did in college, but still struggled with the fact that I really had that much more to lose. I do think I have focused on gaining muscle so I needed something to confirm that so I could have a more positive body image. I came back with 19% body fat which put me in the lean category (18.1-22%). Of course under 18 would have been even more of a boost to put me in the ultra lean category (15-18%) which is the fat levels found in elite athletes, but considering I am not an elite athlete it made me realize that I don't have 10-12 pounds to lose at all, maybe 3-5 unless I want to lose lean muscle tissue (which I don't). 

Anyways, that is my little journal entry for now. Hopefully once we figure out where our life will head in the next few months I will be reenergized to get some more hard training in.
